ULEZ checker
Is your car ULEZ compliant? Choose its fuel type and when it was first registered to see whether it's likely to meet London's Ultra Low Emission Zone standards. It's free and works for any car.
Likely ULEZ compliant
A petrol car first registered in January 2016 should meet the Euro 4 standard ULEZ requires.
This is based on the registration date and fuel type. For a definitive answer, use TfL's vehicle checker. Or check a plate on Kerb to see this alongside its full MOT history.
How ULEZ compliance works
ULEZ is based on Euro emissions standards, not the age of the car as such. Every new car has to meet the standard in force when it was first registered, so the registration date tells you which standard it was at least built to. That's why this checker asks for the fuel type and the month and year of first registration, both shown on the V5C logbook.
Buying a used car? A free Kerb report shows ULEZ status alongside the full MOT history, mileage and road tax for that exact registration.
ULEZ questions
Which cars are ULEZ compliant?
Petrol cars generally need to meet Euro 4, which was mandatory for new cars from January 2006. Diesel cars generally need Euro 6, mandatory for new cars from September 2015. Fully electric cars are compliant.
How much is the ULEZ charge?
Transport for London sets the daily charge for cars that don't meet the standards. Check TfL's website for the current amount and the zone boundary.
My car is older than 2006. Is it definitely not compliant?
Not always. Some older petrol cars were built to Euro 4 before it became mandatory. The registration date is a guide, and TfL's vehicle checker gives the definitive answer for a specific car.
Are classic cars exempt from ULEZ?
Cars over 40 years old that are registered with the DVLA in the historic tax class are exempt from the ULEZ charge.
Do other cities have clean air zones?
Yes. Several UK cities run Clean Air Zones, and each sets its own rules for which vehicles pay. Not all of them charge private cars, so check the local council's website.
